Off-Grid Battery Based Power Systems
Adding batteries to your solar photovoltaic, hydro or wind electric power system will allow you to store power and use it during blackouts or sunless hours. Battery-based systems serve on-grid and off-grid locations. They are optional for grid-tied systems but essential for off-grid systems. Depending on bedrock, climate and other conditions extending the grid can cost $15,000 to $50,000 per mile! A battery based system allows for comfortable living or powering well pumps for livestock in remote locations beyond the grid.
A simple battery based system, like a solar-powered or wind-powered DC pump for delivering well water to livestock or powering DC appliances will consist of an array or turbine, a charge controller, and enough batteries to store power for sunless periods.
To store power for use with AC appliances, like typical household appliances, an inverter will be needed as well.
